Mindful Watering
6/8/2026
Dear Oakley Residents,
The City of Oakley is not issuing any water restrictions at this time. However, we encourage everyone to be mindful of water use, especially when watering lawns. Thoughtful watering helps conserve resources, supports a healthy community supply, and can improve the overall health of your yard.
One of the best ways to use water wisely is to pay attention to how your lawn looks and feels. Lawns that are overwatered and underwatered can sometimes look similar, so checking the soil and watching for common signs can help you make better watering decisions. Early morning watering and deeper, less frequent watering are often more effective than short, frequent watering sessions.
Signs your lawn may be overwatered:
- Soil feels soggy or spongy when walked on.
- Puddles or runoff appear after watering.
- Grass looks limp, yellowing, or unusually soft.
- Mushrooms, moss, or algae begin to appear.
- The lawn stays wet for many hours after watering.
Signs your lawn may be underwatered:
- Grass turns dull gray-green or bluish in color.
- Blades begin to curl, fold, or look dry and crispy.
- Footprints remain visible after walking across the lawn.
- Soil feels dry a few inches below the surface.
- Brown patches appear first in the sunniest or highest spots.
By adjusting watering based on these signs, residents can keep lawns healthy while avoiding unnecessary water use. Thank you for doing your part to use water carefully and responsibly.
Sincerely,
The City of Oakley
